This panel discussion includes a selection of women artists who feature in a display of photobooks at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Curated by PHOTO Australia, the display is being presented in the V&A photography reading room between 13 May – 13 November 2024. The collection of photobooks celebrates a new wave of photographers in Australia who are receiving international acclaim and reaching new audiences through publishing. Collectively these publications reflect a variety of approaches to contemporary practice and address a range of subjects – social, political and environmental – that are of universal concern.
Pippa Milne Moderator
Pippa Milne (MA/LLB) is a curator and writer based in Naarm / Melbourne, originally from Aotearoa New Zealand. She is the Associate Curator for Photo Australia and has been working with photography since 2011. She was previously Senior Curator, Monash Gallery of Art (now Museum of Australian Photography), Curator at Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne and Associate Curator of International Art at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. She has held positions with Australia at Venice and Creative New Zealand at Venice in 2013 and 2015. Recent exhibitions Pippa has curated include Hoda Afshar: Speak the Wind (2022), Not standing still: new approaches in documentary photography (2021), Bill Henson: The light fades but the gods remain (2019).
Atong Atem Speaker
Atong Atem (b. 1991) is a Melbourne based, South Sudanese artist working primarily with photography and film. Atem’s work explores photography as a medium for narrative, mythology and ethnography. Her work explores migration, Australian culture and the various ways that histories can be written. Atem has exhibited her work both locally and internationally, including at The Tate Modern, The National Gallery of Victoria Triennial, Photo Festival, Photo Ireland, Foam and Photo London. She was the recipient of the inaugural La Prairie Art Gallery of NSW Art Award and the inaugural Mecca and National Gallery of Victoria M-Power Grant.
Ying Ang Speaker
Ying Ang (b. 1980, Singapore) is an acclaimed photographer and author with a focus on documentary work ranging from deeply personal narratives to multi-disciplinary abstract and conceptual media. Based in Melbourne, Australia, her work has been acquired by the Victorian State and Australian National Libraries, MoMA and V&A Museum London. She recently exhibited at Rencontres d’Arles in France and NGV in 2023. Ying lectures at the International Center of Photography in New York, is a board member of the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, and the director of Reflexions Masterclass in Europe.
Anu Kumar Speaker
Anu Kumar (b.1990) is a photographic artist living and working in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia). Working primarily with medium format photography, Anu interrogates themes of displacement and the diaspora; using her practice as a gateway to understanding her identity as a woman born in India and raised in Australia.Through her work, Anu strives to archive the quotidian expressions of everyday life as an examination of self, family and belonging. Anu has exhibited at the Center for Contemporary Photography, PHOTO 2022 and has published a monograph with Perimeter Editions which was shortlisted for the 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards. Her photography has also been published in the New York Times and Vogue Italia.
