5 Press represents five Melbourne-based artists: August Carpenter, Cheralyn Lim, Sarah McConnell, Jaime Powell and Sophie Westerman. The artists met while studying at the Victorian College of the Arts, and reconnected a few years later at the inaugural Melbourne Art Book Fair. Finding they shared a love of books, the collective was formed with the intention of investigating the artist book form, through traditional printmaking and book binding techniques.
During the last 6 years, 5 Press have produced over 50 artist books, including a number of collaborations within the framework of the collective. From the beginning, the intention has been to utilise traditional art methods such as etching and lithography and to avoid digital reproductions in order to fully embrace the materiality and labour intensive processes associated with book binding. The books created are printed and hand bound by the artists themselves, creating either small editions or unique state works.
5 Press have participated in a number of major art book fairs internationally and in Australia, including the Melbourne Art Book Fair at the National Gallery of Victoria (2016-2021), Paper Contemporary at the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair (2018-2020), Volume Art Book Fair at Artspace in Sydney (2015 and 2017) and the Singapore Art Book Fair 2019. 5 Press are represented in a number of private and public Australian collections including the National Library of Australia (Canberra), the State Library of Victoria, and the University of Melbourne Lenton Parr Music, Visual and Performing Arts Library (Melbourne).
