Index Journal launched in 2020 as Australia’s only independent online peer-reviewed art history publication. Based in Melbourne, the journal presents original scholarship by art historians from all specialisations, treating the art of the past with the same urgency as it does the art of the present. For each issue, Index Journal invites a guest editor to raise a polemic—in the form of a single proposition—that calls for pressing art historical attention. Index Journal also publishes special editions, the most recent being Ernst Jünger: Philosophy Under Occupation (2021).
Index Journal, MeMO Review, and Discipline are Melbourne’s foremost independent art history and criticism publications. The publications share a core editorial team consisting of academics, writers and curators, with each publication having a distinct editorial focus, and will share a stall at the the Melbourne Art Book Fair.
